What are intelligibility drills?
Intelligibility drills in which the individual reads words, phrases, or sentences and attempts to repair content not understood by the listener.
What is exaggerated consonants?
Consonant exaggeration is another compensatory strategy that improves the intelligibility of dysarthric speech. Teach the patient to over-articulate in order to emphasize the sounds that s/he is slighting. (Medial and final consonants are typically most slighted in running speech.)
What are the types of dysarthria?
We outline the different types of dysarthria below.
- Spastic dysarthria. People with spastic dysarthria may have speech problems alongside generalized muscle weakness and abnormal reflexes.
- Flaccid dysarthria.
- Ataxic dysarthria.
- Hypokinetic dysarthria.
- Hyperkinetic dysarthria.
What is resonance speech?
Speech resonance is the result of the transfer of sound produced by the vocal folds through the vocal tract comprised of the pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity (Kummer, 2020a; Peterson-Falzone, Trost-Cardamone, Karnell, & Hardin-Jones, 2017).
What are Amrs and Smrs?
Alternating motion rate (AMR) and sequential motion rate (SMR) are the two traditional tests of oral diadochokinesis used to as- sess motor speech production. AMR involves a single syllable being repeated at maximum rate, whereas for SMR a sequence of syllables is repeated at maximum rate.
What is Hypernasality?
Hypernasality—occurs when there is sound energy in the nasal cavity during production of voiced, oral sounds. Hyponasality—occurs when there is not enough nasal resonance on nasal sounds due to a blockage in the nasopharynx or nasal cavity.
How do you explain over articulation?
Over-articulation is, as one might guess, the process whereby we give too much energy to the articulation of our thoughts, dialling up the emphasis strategies we use to make words stand out beyond the needs of the situation or environment we’re in.
What is garbled speech a symptom of?
Dysarthria occurs when the muscles you use for speech are weak or you have difficulty controlling them. Dysarthria often causes slurred or slow speech that can be difficult to understand.
How is language different from speech?
Speech is the sound of spoken language and includes the formation of a sound, the nature of the sound quality and the rhythm and flow of the sound. Language is the words we use and how we use them to share ideas and get what we want.
What type of dysarthria is associated with MS?
Mixed dysarthria is most common in MS, because multiple neurological systems are typically involved. In mixed dysarthria, nerve damage may involve your brain’s white matter and/or cerebellum, your brainstem, and/or your spinal cord.
