How do you miter corners on a quilt border?

- Determine Length. To find how long each border piece needs to be, use this equation: length of quilt side + (width of the border x 2) + 6″ = Total Border Fabric.
- Pin the Borders in Place.
- Sew the Borders to the Quilt Top.
- Mark.
- Sew the Mitered Corner.
- Trim and Press.
What is Mitering a corner?
Mitered Corners are when two edges meet at a 45 degree angle, creating a 90 degree corner. As quilters we miter the corners of our binding and sometimes our borders. Mitered borders are basically a y-seam technique. Some fabrics lend themselves to mitering based on their design.
How do you Miter Multiple quilt borders?
Pin the borders to the sides and mark in at 1/4″ from the end on all four corners. Sew side borders onto the quilt starting and stopping at marks. Backstitch at the beginning and end of each of these seams. Iron both of these borders out toward the border and away from the quilt top.
How do you Miter a striped border?
Clip a tiny slit right at the pen marks. Pin the short border ends to the white strip, between the clip marks. Stitch from one dot mark to the other, backstitching a little at each end. Press that first border out, and lay the side border on at the corner, matching the clip to the end of the strip.
How do I turn the corners on a quilt?
How to Turn Corners with Binding
- Slide the quilt out from under the foot slightly so you can fold the binding strip.
- Fold the strip over to the right creating a fold with a 45″ angle. The bottom of the binding strip will now run parallel to the next side of the quilt.
How do you sew corners?
With your fabric right sides together, begin to sew along the seam allowance. As you approach the corner (and your drawn lines), get ready to stop and pivot at the marked point. Stop with the needle in the down position. Lift up your presser foot, pivot, lower the foot back into position, and continue sewing.
