Is the DAT Hard? The short answer is that, yes, the DAT is reasonably difficult. It is a 5-hour test (including optional, but highly recommended breaks), comprised of four sections: Reading Comprehension – 3 reading passages and 50 questions that test your comprehension and analysis of scientific content.

The number of people failing out is so low (see the spreadsheet I linked) that there is no “general” thing people do. It’s very rare for someone to not complete dental school. It’s also very rare for someone to not have a moment of crisis in dental school- you’re normal.

The ideal dental school applicant will have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher. Many schools average Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (BCP) GPAs together. For these science courses, the average applicant should strive for a 3.4 GPA or higher. Applicants may not score below a C in any required course, end of story.

Can you take the DAT more than 3 times?
You can take the DAT as many times as you need to for a qualifying score. If you have to take it more than three times, you will need to send some proof that you are in school (or similar dental school progress) for the ADA to let you retake a fourth time.
Can I apply to dental school before taking dat?
The ADEA AADSAS application becomes available mid-May and may be submitted in early June. Must I complete all required courses before I apply? No. However, we recommend that you have completed most of the science courses prior to taking the required Dental Admission Test (DAT).
