What are lithography systems?
A lithography system is essentially a projection system. Light is projected through a blueprint of the pattern that will be printed (known as a ‘mask’ or ‘reticle’). The blueprint is four times larger than the intended pattern on the chip.
How much does an ASML machine cost?
around $150 million each
ASML’s most advanced machines in current commercial production, known as EUV lithography systems because of the “Extreme Ultraviolet” light waves they use to map out the circuitry of computer chips, are as big as a bus and cost around $150 million each.
What is difference between EUV and DUV?
Unlike DUV lithography sources, based on excimer lasers, EUV plasma sources produce light across a broad range of wavelengths. Though the EUV spectrum is not completely monochromatic, nor even as spectrally pure as DUV laser sources, the working wavelength has generally been taken to be 13.5 nm.
What is ASML DUV?
ASML’s deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems dive deep into the UV spectrum to print the tiny features that form the basis of the microchip.
What wavelength is G line?
436 nm
General exposure wavelengths for broadband UV-lithography are in a range between 300 nm and 450 nm, which includes the important lines of high-pressure mercury lamp at 436 nm (g-line), 405 nm (h-line) and 365 nm (i-line). The state-of-the-art technologies are currently determined by g-line and i-line wavelength ranges.
Is ASML considered to be a monopoly?
Given no one else can make EUV machines that are suitable for mass manufacturing, ASML has a monopoly on the segment and there’s no sign of anyone catching up. “ASML is absolutely critical to the entire semiconductor ecosystem,” Peter Hanbury, a semiconductor analyst at Bain & Co, told CNBC.
Who make lithography machines?
ASML
It might seem unintuitive that the demand for a $120 million tool far outstrips supply, but only one company can make them. It’s a Dutch company called ASML, which nearly exclusively makes lithography machines for chip manufacturing.
Why is NA EUV high?
To avoid EUV double patterning, chipmakers are pushing for high-NA EUV at 3nm and beyond. High-NA EUV promises to enable the simpler single-patterning approach. “The tool provides more resolution. So that means that you can print more features with it.
What is Deep UV?
The deep UV (DUV) region occupies wavelengths between 280 nm and ~200 nm, about half that of visible light. Typical light sources that are used in the regions of the UV spectrum are noted. Included is the single important wavelength of F2 at 157 nm used for high-density photo-lithography.
