What is the purpose for a Mel-Temp apparatus?
The Mel-Temp® Digital Melting Point Apparatus offers a quick and easy way to measure the melting points of samples at a budget price with a temperature resolution of ±1°C.
How fast do you heat the sample in the Mel-Temp when determining a melting point?
2-4 ºC per minute
Practical tip 1: If the approximate temperature at which your sample should melt is known, the sample can be quickly heated to within 10-15 ºC of its melting point. Then the heating rate can be slowed to 2-4 ºC per minute until the sample melts.
What part of instrument is used to adjust the rate of heating on a Mel Temp apparatus?
The heating rate can be controlled by a rheostat, and with a special thermometer the apparatus can be used up to 500 oC, far above the useful limit of silicone oil (about 350 oC).

What setting should you use on the Mel-Temp melting point apparatus to determine the melting point of naphthalene?
Start with the Mel-Temp apparatus set at 5 until it reads about 179°, then set it to 4.5. 8) You and your lab partner take melting points of the same sample.
What does melting point say about purity?
A substance (solid) containing soluble impurities usually melts at a lower temperature than the pure compound. It can also melt over a wide range of temperatures and is called the “melting point depression.” In general, the smaller the range of melting temperatures, the higher the purity of the sample.

How do you seal the end of a capillary tube?
For vertical applications, we recommend capillary tubes be sealed by applying a dollop of silicone sealant to the end of the tube. Seal when temperatures are moderate (50 – 70° F), with the unit in a vertical position. The tubes must never be removed or crimped.
