What is a bit in audio recording?
The audio bit depth determines the number of possible amplitude values we can record for each sample. The most common audio bit depths are 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit. Each is a binary term, representing a number of possible values.
What is DSD64 and DSD128?
A ‘standard’ DSD file- often referred to as DSD64 is roughly equivalent to a sample rate of 24/88.2kHz. ‘Double DSD’ or DSD128 samples that single bit of information 5.6 million times a second to give you a signal equivalent to 24/176.2kHz.
Does bit depth affect sound quality?
The higher the bit depth, the more data will be captured to more accurately re-create the sound. If the bit depth is too low, information will be lost, and the reproduced sample will be degraded. For perspective, each sample recorded at 16-bit resolution can contain any one of 65,536 unique values (216).

Can humans hear 24-bit audio?
In the human auditory system, the threshold of hearing is 0dB SPL, whilst the threshold of pain is around 120dB SPL. As such, the 144dB of dynamic range that 24 bit offers is already high enough to capture sounds lower than we can hear and louder than we can tolerate.
Is DSD the same as SACD?
SACD audio is stored in DSD, which differs from the conventional PCM used by the compact disc or conventional computer audio systems. A DSD recorder uses delta-sigma modulation. DSD is 1-bit with a 2.8224 MHz sampling rate. The output from a DSD recorder is a bitstream.
Is 48KHz enough?
A sample rate of 48KHz can perfectly reproduce any sound at frequencies less than 24KHz, that’s half the sample rate. The upper limit of human hearing is around 20KHz. It’s certainly possible that you can hear up to 22.05KHz or more, so you might be able to hear a difference between 44.1k and 48k sample rates.
