What is Neurodynamics physiotherapy?
Neurodynamics in the sense implied here is the mobilisation of the nervous system as an approach to physical treatment of pain. The treatment and or assessment relies on influencing pain physiology via the mechanical treatment of neural tissues and non-neural structures surrounding the nervous system.
What is Neurodynamics test?
A neurodynamic assessment evaluates the length and mobility of various components of the nervous system. They are performed by the therapist placing progressively more tension on the component of the nervous system that is being tested and are divided into upper and lower limb tests.
What are Neurodynamic exercises?
Neurodynamic exercises use specific combinations of spine and limb movements that aim to reduce nerve mechanosensitivity and restore symptom-free limb movement and function.
What causes neural tension?
Some of these contributing factors include: Sustained periods of inactivity. Repetitive movements (whether it’s exercise-related, work-related or simply something you do frequently in your daily routine). Tension in the surrounding muscles or fascia (connective tissue).
When are nerve glides used?
Nerve glides are normally needed when a nerve is injured by being compressed or inflamed. Injured nerves can be identified by a sharp, shooting, tingling or numbing pain.
What is neural mobilization?
Neural mobilization is a movement-based therapy, applied manually or via exercise. The nerve is mobilized relative to adjacent structures, with the aim of reducing symptoms through mechanisms that may be mechanical, such as reduced edema and improved load tolerance, or neurophysiologic.
What is neurological tension?
What is neural tension? Neural tension can occur when nerves are not sliding and gliding through tissues as they usually would.
What helps neural tension?
Depending on the severity of the damage that is causing nerve tension, surgery may be necessary. However, in most cases nerve tension can be relieved through physical therapy such as osteopathy or physiotherapy, and prescribed stretching exercises.
What is nerve gliding therapy?
Nerve gliding exercises encourage the nerves to glide normally as you move your joints. A nerve may not glide well if it is injured or inflamed, as it can get entrapped in the surrounding soft tissue. Therefore, nerve gliding exercises are often used post-surgery or as part of a rehabilitation program from an injury.
